Top9 ALBUMS of 2014

1)    1989

Taylor Swift’s fifth studio album released at the end of the year. This is her first record, unlike the other albums with no trace of country sounds. Singles from this album ‘Shake It Off’, ’Blank Space’ were released so far made their way into the top 10 of Billboard charts. Majority of the songs are as obsessed with dudes, and as usual boy-centric like her previous works. Her melodic sensibility and lyrical magic have been the biggest assets of the album, making it the best one of the  year.

2)    Four

One Direction, the makers of the 2013 best selling album worldwide ‘Midnight Memories’ are back at the end of 2014 with their fourth album ‘FOUR’. As the boy-band releases their fourth album, there is an overwhelming fan base making them world conquering superstars and there are uncomfortably-matured adults commenting ‘they are just a boy band’. With perky pop hits like ‘No Control’, ‘18’, ‘Fool’s Gold’, ‘Steal My Girl’, ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ and pop melodies like ‘Night Changes’, ‘Once in a Lifetime’ stand as the catchy tracks of the album. ‘FOUR’ has been sold nearly 100K copies in just 5 days and heading towards another successful pop album.

3)    Ghost Stories

Ghost Stories is the sixth studio album by British rock band Coldplay. This is the sound of a band paying homage to their past hugely successful albums ‘Viva la Vida’, ‘Mylo Xyloto’, ‘X&Y’ as well as pawning at the future. The melancholy sounds are genuinely heart broken. The songs like ‘Ink’, ‘Sky full of Stars’, ‘Another’s Arm’ fell like something bigger and deeper than melancholy.

4)    The Endless River

‘The Endless River’ is a long, predominantly instrumental album that is said to be Pink Floyd’s final cut. Rather than scrappy young dudes playing to the hallucinating fans in the 60’s, Pink Floyd have long since became wizened music veterans. For devoted fans, these songs may comprise something like a musical memoir of their previous songs and albums closing out a half-century career.

5)    X

After his 2011 debut album ‘+’, Ed Sheeran is back with his bleary ballads and fronting folk-rap. On the Pharrell team-up “Sing”, Sheeran’s attempt to ‘do a Justin Timberlake’ is deflated by his voice without wit or romance. But his cheesy love & detachment ballads made his album special with hits like ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

6)    5 Seconds Of Summer

It is debut full-length album of the Australian pop-punk band 5 Seconds of Summer. This album is more of a collection of songs they wrote, but if you dig deeper a little, the theme of the entire album is the joys and downs of being a teenager. The pop/rock songs with a pop-punk edge that is present throughout the album with their unbeat energy is visible in their hit singles “She looks so perfect’, ‘Amnesia’, ‘Good Girls’. This was good first step by the newer pop/rock band.

7)    V

‘V’ is Maroon 5 ‘s fifth studio album with tracks which are equally big, bold and cinematic like their previous ones. The album opens with their built-in monsters ‘Maps’, ‘Animals’, ‘It was Always you’ leading the charts. The more you listen to these songs, the more you like it. It has retro feel, catchy tunes and honest lyrics that proves M5 is just awesome. It may not be the greatest one compared to Overexposed, Songs about Jane or Hands All Over but they still sound like an actual band again with a fresh and new sound.

8)    My Everything

Nearly a year after releasing her debut album, Ariana Grande came with a follow-up. She eases up on her vocal trills to deliver a mostly restrained performances that soars where it really counts. ‘My Everything’ is filled with collaborations galore with Iggy, DJ Zedd, Cashmore Cat, Diana Ross and some other to add some extra edge. Grande’s debut album ‘Yours Truly’ was cute but ‘My Everything’ made her a true pop star.

9)    The Hunting Party

‘Linkin Park’, the world’s most successful rock band of 21st century came up with their sixth studio album. The band embraced a guitar-driven hard rock sound in this album. It landed down a variety of hard hitting songs like ‘Guilty All the Same’, ‘Final Masquerade’, ‘War’, ‘Rebellion’ which provide a powerful rock-solid effect. With the emphasis on guitars and guest musicians, Chester and Shindo still has plenty of moments to shine keeping the Linkin Park flow going on.
